(I could have gone to Ericsson to work on their rather more sinister exciting SSR 8000 family of routers, but for about 50% more salary and 50% more benefits, the choice was not really a choice at all...)

So... for some weird reason I finally got a real job. Starting on May 5th, I'll be working at the Hungarian offices of evosoft

Autoplaying YouTube video? Fuck that noise.

What's the deal with Hungarian politics at the moment? Are Jobbik really that popular?

Whatever happened to PenguinX...has he found fame and fortune in Pixel Art yet.

Or WingWalker...has she slammed into a runway in a tragic miscalculation by the pilot yet.

Penguin developed some brushes for some graphics program that I've seen two comic book artists that I like tweet about.  Wingwalker is still doing shows.

What's the deal with Hungarian politics at the moment? Are Jobbik really that popular?

I'd put it as "reasonably popular" (especially among people without higher education)... but then again they are still far right, so reason doesn't really enter the equation. The party itself is actually the lesser of the problems surrounding it - they are doing more damage indirectly, by providing an idea well for the once again almighty FIDESZ to pick and choose the more popular (but not less harmful for it) ones from. (The criminalization of the homeless is just a particularly vivid example of things nicked straight out of Jobbik's playbook, but there are other, more subtle signs of ideas seeping through.)

Right now, the entire left is shot to shit - fragmentation, infighting, and basically just a stunning, astounding, awe-inspiring lack of any hint of a program other than "you don't want these guys again, right?" has seen to that. (And a bit of gerrymandering from FIDESZ as well...) If they don't sort their shit out, the 2018 elections will be a fucking farce.

It's one of the main reasons (the other being a far more lucrative offer) I chose evosoft over Ericsson - there's more of a chance here that I can level up to Germany in a few years time.

Eurovision in Iceland is serious business. I'm drunk amidst a group of them and the city is just barren. No cars or people moving outside. Strange (and there's no way Iceland will win).

Truth. Better than a lot of games, but nowhere near as good as the first.

My biggest complaint is it feels too videogamey. DS1 had this huge cohesive world that felt real and alive. DS2 has a bunch of disparate levels not really connected to each other. Mechanically, DS2 has more things going for it: better encumberance system, dual wielding that works, non-shitty bows, better explanation of the numbers on the character sheet. But I don't love it like I do DS1.

Hell, I've hardly touched it in months. It just hasn't grabbed hold of me like a really fantastic game would. Part of that is school, part of that is D3 getting turned into awesome, but mostly ds2 has been underwhelming.

Wow, Dark Souls II on the PC sucks donkey balls.  I hate developers that can't be bothered to use keyboard instructions on screen when they know you're playing on a PC.  30 minutes and I already know I'll never play again.

G.I. Joe was expectedly dumb, but provides a decent enough distraction from sitting in a metal tube built to the cheapest specifications hurling its way across the ocean at an altitude that would simultaneously suffocate and freeze me to death before hitting ground if I was ever exposed to it.

I've grown to thoroughly dislike flying.

But anyway, back to movies.

I, too, was on an airplane recently and watched a few movies. Robocop, the remake. Good enough. The Monuments Men. OK for an airplane. Bad Grandpa, had me laughing out loud. I was surprised. The Lego Movie, OK, glad I watched it on a plane. The Desolation of Smaug, I fell asleep to. The Hobbit movies are really disappointing. I actually put LotR on for the final hour of the flight and it's still good.

Yah those Hobbit movies are completely void of any sense of real threat or intensity. Give me Games of Thrones any day of the week.

I felt Lego started off amazing, but [vague spoiler] as it moved into its last chapters it lost any sense of telling a point through a story and just slid right into spelling out everything. The whole last 20 minutes or whatever was just.. head shaking. I guess it's for kids, so, I'm out of the target audience, but then that's a weird point to make to a kid.

Winter Soldier was a snooze fest.

I'm liking Last Stand so far though. There's a simple purity to it that's enjoyable, and it's like a nice parable of Arnold's life and career.

I thought the point was consistent throughout: just have fun. I didn't think it was a weird moral for kids because the moral is actually directed at any adults that are watching it: kids already know that Lego is for playing with and that the best way to play with it is is to make thematic soup.

I think The Lego Movie is masterful and makes great use of its license.

Hm, but, they spell out the morale in huge neon, and hammer it home over and over.. I figured it's because it's ultimately a kids movie and they need to make things totally obvious.

Or.. maybe I didn't like being pulled out of the "immersion", faced with the reality that the movie is actually just this figment of imagination robbed some of the magic and point to the events. I was first hoping the live action scenes were just a short 10 second gag but it just kept going and going..

The actual points of the movie itself seems great for all ages, I wanted it to be less obvious about it though.

The Hobbit is at best a mediocre book to begin with - I think they have actually improved a bit on the source material in the movies (so far).

As for LOTR... that's strictly horses for courses territory. I'd need to be seriously hungover and/or have an unreasonable amount of free time on my hands to even consider talking about the LOTR movies anywhere north of silly quips.

The Hobbit may or may not be a mediocre book, I can't really remember. However I'm very confident that the movies haven't improved on it, because the movies are terribad and mostly what's been added aren't so much additions as they are warping the actual story of The Hobbit to follow the exact same pattern as LOTR.  You have the dwarves taking the role of the main party, Bilbo branching off to do the stuff with the ring, and Gandalf also off doing his own thing. You also have the inter-racial doomed romance between an elf and a guy who is totally a dwarf you guys, he just looks like Aragorn's cousin.

The worst part for me is that they shoe-horned in all these fight scenes, but the fights are competely pointless because nobody dies, and we know that going in because those fights weren't in the book. I suppose they could've created some characters to kill off, but they didn't. So what you have are massively overpowered heroes cutting their way through waves of spiders or orcs as if this isn't the movie, but rather the videogame based on the movie. And while I like videogames, and in fact the Return of the King game is one of the best co-op games out there, I don't want to watch other people play.

Oh so a lot of the right scenes are added in? They've all been completely dumb, with no sense of peril, so it's interesting to hear it's just made up shit.

It goes without saying, but G.I. Joe 2 was very bad. Very very bad.

Need For Speed had a more intimate (or low-budget if you will) feel to it that I greatly appreciated. But it wasn't a good movie, the whole thing tells a depressing story of being unable to move on, and making irrational decisions that the movie tries to cast as 'cool'. Sheesh.

Mediocre at best - basically, it's a fucking children's book. Mind you, I'm not saying all fantasy should be Angsty McGrimdark, but the tone is just way too whimsical. I've first read it around the time I was coming off of the Swallows and Amazons series, and The Hobbit positively felt like a step back - and not because of the fantasy setting.

Firing up Need for Speed just for shits and gaggles. (btw, you shut your filthy mouth about GI Joe 2...)
