So, more importantly, which thread should become the new sports thread? Or should we just flashmob any thread we want?

That second thing.

Shadarr-

What do you think about the cracks in the player's union? Apparently a couple of guys have come out and said that they would accept a salary cap if it stopped the lockout.

Tom Edsall, political reporter for The Washington Post:

"It looks that Bush is coming in with a lot stronger mandate than most people had thought," Edsall said. "I think if anything, he's going to feel more confident pressing and continuing the conservative agenda that he promoted during his four years."

John Titor:

The President or leader in 2005 I believe tried desperately to be the next Lincoln and hold the country together but many of their policies drove a larger wedge into the Bill of Rights

I wonder how Bush's corporate friends would feel about me going on a big credit spending spree and then later, when they want to collect the money they loaned to me, I tell them "Sorry guys, I just don't have it, want to loan me some more money?".

It really is quite amusing.

Sorry, world.  I voted for Kerry...

Lincoln got shot. I don't think Bush will get shot.

I do wonder if Bush Sr. was behind the Reagan assassination attempt though.

I want the union broken.  There was a great column I read the other day pointing out that the majority of the players would be unaffected by a salary cap.  And in fact the player's union should be fulfilling the same role as the Screen Actor's Guild.  Tom Hanks doesn't need the SAG fighting for better pay for extras, but the SAG needs Tom Hanks.  The amount of money that guys making less than a million per are losing, while this thing drags on, is money that they won't ever get back.  And it's money they would get under a salary cap.

Unfortunately I can't find the link because I don't remember where I saw it.

Actually, the thing I think is hillarious is how 1/3 of NHL players are playing in Europe right now, for far less money, stealing other players' jobs... to fight against exactly that sort of situation in the NHL.  Like the man says, they are scabs.

Another interesting thing I saw about the NHL strike is that the commissioner said teams are losing less money now by not playing than they do when they are playing. If that is true -- how do I  know -- that's an amazing thing. Certainly doesn't bode well for the game if the sides stick to their guns.

I'm willing to lose a whole season or more, if it means that the owners are able to do what needs to be done to fix the league.  If there had been a salary cap, the Jets wouldn't have had to move.  Quebec probably would have, because they just didn't have the fan support.  Fucking French.

I also hope that the league folds a bunch of teams.  That would go a long way toward improving the on-ice quality.

Over 76% of hockey revenues go to salaries, compared to 64% with the NFL and 57% with the NBA.

Well, if the owners just had an under-the-table handshake agreement on a salary cap, the players union would accuse them of collusion.

The players and the owners are at fault, yes, but the big money guys are looking out for themselves and not the little guys. They are a "union" in name only.

Greg-

Over 76% of hockey revenues go to salaries, compared to 64% with the NFL and 57% with the NBA.

That would agree with the commissioner then. Cause only 24% of revenue is left over for other expenses (and potential profit), compared to 36 and 43, respectively.

I'm actually interested in how government debt works.  The money has to come from somewhere, doesn't it?  They can't just be "printing" new money, otherwise they wouldn't actually owe it.  So who is lending money to an organisation that obviously has no intention of ever paying back the loan, and in fact borrows more money every year?  And why are they doing it?

Man, I remember the good old days, when I bought my brother a Detroit Red Wings jersey from River City Sports in Winnipeg. I had it customized with his last name and favorite number, and with shipping, it only cost me $37 US.

Yot,

Yeah, if they weren't so stupidly expensive I would have several more jerseys than I do.  The two I own are ones I bought for playing floorhockey (Penguins dark and Sharks white), and neither of them have a name or number because that would've pushed the price over $100.

lwf's link is pretty accurate, although I imagine the quotes that end the piece are way out of context. Here is a slightly easier to understand link with more context. The difference between lwf and I, is that I think that this system is necessary and beneficial because the without central bank reserves you will get bank failures and panics etc. The only alternative is to end fractional reserve banking and return to the gold standard (or some other such standard) which would drastically retract the available money supply and would retard investment and growth in the economy.
